SUMMARY:Changes to Community Foundation Grant Process

If the letter of intent is approved\, a full grant proposal would be due on March 2\, 2012.  A final funding decision from the Community Foundation Board of Trustees will be received on May 17\, 2012. Additional information about the changes to the grant process can be found on the Community Foundation website at www.community-foundation.com.

SUMMARY:Service-Learning Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:WHAT IS SERVICE-LEARNING? Service-learning is an educational strategy that reinforces and enriches classroom learning by extending student learning beyond the classroom into the community by involving students in meaningful classroom-based service activities. Research demonstrates that\, when compared with students in “regular” classrooms\, students involved in service-learning programs do better on standardized performance tests in math\, science\, and reading; are absent less often; engage in fewer “at-risk” behaviors and have fewer discipline problems; have a more positive attitude about school; and are more trustworthy\, honest\, and caring. WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE WORKSHOP? The goal of the “Service-Learning Training Workshop” is to help educators\, students\, agency staff\, and service recipients experience the benefits of participating in high-quality\, curriculum-based service-learning programs that connect naturally with state standards. HOW LONG IS THE WORKSHOP? WHO SHOULD COME? The “Train-the-Trainers” workshop consists of two days of hands-on training. Educators\, agency staff\, and students are welcome! WHAT IS COVERED IN THE WORKSHOP? January 27\, 2012 3:30-8:30pm January 28\, 2012 8:30am – 3:30pm What Service-Learning Is (and is not) – including the new “K-12 Service-Learning Standards for Quality Practice” Benefits of Service-Learning Service-Learning Planning Model Connecting Service-Learning with Academic Content Standards Service-Learning and Student Success            Building Support for Your Program Building Effective Partnerships Evaluation: Finding Out What Happens and Why Reflection – Learning from Service Developmental Factors in Design Service-Learning and Character Education Service-Learning and Civic Education Service-Learning and HB1 and SB311 WHAT DOES THE WORKSHOP COST? Ohio Department of Education sponsors the training workshop at no cost to you. The registration fee (see below) covers the cost for meals. You are responsible for your own transportation and lodging. WHEN AND WHERE IS THE WORKSHOP? January 27 and 28\, 2012 at The Family Center\, 1800 North Blanchard Street- Findlay\, Ohio 45840. HOW DO YOU REGISTER? Checks should be mailed to The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation at 101 W. Sandusky Street\, Suite 207- Findlay\, Ohio 45840.  For questions\, please call Kimberly Bash at 419-425-1100. The Workshop is based on the “Service-Learning Training Manual” (Bradley)\, and is intended to serve as a resource for educators and agency staff who are then able to train colleagues in strategies for planning\, implementing\, and evaluating successful service-learning programs in their own areas. Participants who complete the two-day training will be certified as “Service-Learning Trainers.”  Participants attending the 2-day training will receive a certificate indicating that they have earned 12 contact hours.  They will also receive a copy of the “Service-Learning Training Manual”.  For those seeking graduate credit\, we are offering one graduate credit hour through the University of Findlay.  The cost is $231.  If you are interested in graduate credit\, please let Kimberly Bash know as soon as possible so that she can share the process for receiving graduate credit with you.  You will need to pay this additional expense directly to the University of Findlay.
