Grants: An Overview

Contributions Benefit Your Community

Established in 1992, The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation is an outgrowth of the L. Dale Dorney Fund. The Dorney Fund, established in 1976 by L. Dale Dorney, has served as a model of grantmaking and philanthropic giving in our community. Between the years of 1976 and 1996, the Dorney Fund awarded $4.4 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, educational programs and scholarships that benefited citizens in Hancock County.

Many local donors have followed in Mr. Dorney’s footsteps, making it possible for The Community Foundation to grant $3.3 million in 2008.

Types of Grants

  • Competitive Grants: Grants are made from Unrestricted and Field Of Interest Funds.
  • HancockREADS Grants: A special literacy initiative of The Community Foundation aimed at “Stamping Out Illiteracy.”
  • Hancock Education Fund Grants: Grants for teachers and schools to fund programs which encourage global literacy and sensitivity to foreign cultures.
  • Donor Advised Grants: Grants are made from Donor Advised Funds established by individuals who wish to remain actively involved with how their donation is distributed to the community.
